Who We Are
Our Roots
The Christian Universalist Church of America was founded in Deerfield Beach, Florida in 1964 by Universalists who opposed the merger of the American Unitarian Association with the Universalist Church of America that created the Unitarian-Universalist Association (UUA). At its height, it consisted of 200 churches in 21 states with 15,000 members (The Encyclopedia of American Religions, J. Gordon Melton, 2009). It was re-established as The Universalist Church on September 6, 2001, by The Rev. Dr. James Walter Clifton and other Universalist clergy. The Church changed its name on July 2, 2015, to Universalist Congregations of North America and was incorporated in the State of Indiana eventually returning to its original name. We are intentionally, distinctively, and unapologetically Christian believing in the doctrine of universalism and in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour. Our beliefs are succinctly stated in the Winchester Profession of Faith of 1803. We have no connection to nor affiliation with the UUA.
Winchester Profession of Faith
I. We believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments contain a revelation of the character of God and of the duty, interest and final destination of mankind.
II. We believe that there is one God, whose nature is love, revealed in one Lord Jesus Christ, by one Holy Spirit of Grace, who will finally restore the whole family of mankind to holiness and happiness.
III. We believe that holiness and true happiness are inseparably connected and that believers ought to be careful to maintain order and practice good works; for these things are good and profitable unto men.
To this, we add: Each person will be held accountable for his or her earthly transgressions.
